Henry, Matthew

Henry, Matthew
(1662–1714)
   Devotional Writer.
Henry was the son of Philip Henry (1631– 96), the English Puritan diarist. He trained as a lawyer, but instead was ordained as a Presbyterian minister. He served congregations in Chester and Hackney. He is remembered for his monumental, seven-volume Exposition of the Old and New Testaments, a detailed, spiritualised commentary on the biblical text. It was highly influential in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and preachers such as Charles spurgeon acknowledged their debt to it.
